Since the nineteenth century, salon shows represented premier quality artworks. In France and England, the salons featured artists trained by the Royal Academies, who painted classical subjects from history and mythology. As artistic tastes evolved, the salons also changed. With the rise of the Impressionists, independent salons began to welcome plein air paintings of everyday life by artists such as Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. By the twentieth century, salon shows even included modernists, Henri Matisse and Andre Derain.
