Philip Steel

Giclee Prints by Philip Steel

Mr. Steel's painting career began as a teenager in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He studied drawing and painting at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Chester County Art Association where he also taught.

He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Architecture and a commission in the Navy. His Navy tour took him to the South Pacific and the Orient where his work was influenced by the beauty he saw there. After his Navy tour, he completed a Master of Architecture Degree from the University of California at Berkeley where he also continued his painting studies.

A resident of southern Florida, Mr. Steel has continued his painting and architectural rendering, teaching both topics at the University of Miami in Florida. Much of his subject matter reflects his love of the sea and the people whose lives are affected by it. His work is found in many public, private and corporate collections throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. He teaches watercolor painting at the Center for the Arts in South Florida. He has taught watercolor workshops in Italy and France, and will be teaching in Scotland the fall 1996.

He has won numerous awards for his paintings. Within the last year he won five juried awards in South Florida, with a first in painting at a 4-County Show. He also placed third at the 10th Annual Tri-State Watercolor Exhibition. He is a participating member of the Florida Watercolor Society, and exhibits his paintings in fine galleries form Maine to Rhode Island to Annapolis.
