Lois Engberg

Lois Engberg is a Maryland artist who paints still life oils in the classic realist traditions. Her fruit and flower still lifes are strongly influenced by the Old Masters. She uses the same chiaroscuro techniques achieved by painters such as Rembrandt, Valazques and Vermeer.

Lois says her own colorful garden provides a continual source of inspiration. She enjoys the challenge of immortalizing the flowers growing in her garden. After selecting and arranging a fresh bouquet, she establishes a strong focal area using a single light source, creating dramatic contrasts in light and dark.

To engage and entertain the viewer with an array of tactile sensations, she will often add tapestry or linens, interesting antique brass, copper or porcelain containers and fresh fruits to the composition. Concentrating on capturing their freshness and delicacy, Lois paints the flowers quickly using a direct alla-prima method. She incorporates some palette knife work in her paintings to achieve the most delicate passages and applies impasto paint in the focal area. She is a realist artist in the classical traditon and prefers to work from life.

Lois Engberg has always loved to paint and draw and has received much encouragement and training from her mother, also a painter. She has also studied at the Scottsdale Artist School in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia and holds a Liberal Arts degree from Salisbury University. Lois has continued to refine her skills by attending workshops, studying with some of the premier classic artists in the country.

Lois is an associate member of the Oil Painters of America, Allied Artists of America and American Society of Portrait Artists. She was selected as a finalist in the still life category by The Artists Magazine in a national competition.
