Beth Bathe

Beth Bathe is an artist residing in Lancaster, PA. After a long career as a graphic designer, Beth now pursues painting full time. Primarily painting en plein air in oil since 2013, she participates in high profile competitions from Maine to Washington State, including Plein Air Easton, Door County, WI, Cape Ann, MA, Richmond, VA and the Annapolis, MD Plein Air competition, for a total of 12 competitions in 2019 alone. Her paintings have won numerous awards and honors. She was also a featured artist in the 2018 February/March issue of Plein Air Magazine.

Beth’s painting style is unique, appearing somewhat like watercolor, or is it an oil painting? She uses Cobra Water Mixable Oil Colors in thin washes with a limited tonalist palette, with unconventional tools, squeegees and q-tips along with brushes. Her representational paintings have been described by critics as evoking nostalgia as in old sepia toned photographs, often with only small areas of color. Beth is highly influenced by noted Pennsylvania painter, Andrew Wyeth. Her subject matter is often refered to as ‘the vanishing landscape.’ She finds beauty in old buildings, barns and small towns from generations past, buildings often beyond their ‘prime.’ Barns, Victorian farmhouses, a back alley, a fire escape, an old mill, or a split rail fence running along a country road, are favorite subjects. Beth paints primarily on location to catch her subject at a specific time, especially showing late light and shadows to create drama and emotion.
