Matt Klos Artist Biography

Maryland artist Matt Klos is an accomplished oil painter and watercolorist. He is also a sought-after painting instructor who currently heads the Art Department at Anne Arundel Community College.

Kaizaad Kotwal, a writer for Columbus Magazine described Klos as a rising star in the art world. In 2009 Klos was selected to participate in a show at McBride Gallery, which co-incidentally had the same theme: "Rising Stars 10 Artists to Watch." Kotwal said, "You have to see Klos’ works up close to see the meticulous and masterful way in which he captures light and its magical effect on surfaces and colors. His goal is to unite images throughout his works by time-tested techniques and a few tricks of his own."

2010 was an important year in his art career. Matt Klos was awarded a solo show at the New York Prince Street Gallery in August, marking his first solo exhibition in Manhattan. A large part of his summer was spent painting in the Brittany region of France, sponsored through the Klots Residency program, awarded and facilitated by the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Matt was awarded an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2008. In 2007 he won Best in Show at the Bethesda Painting Awards in Washington, DC and was one of ten finalists for the Ninth Annual Miami University, Young Painter’s Competition. In 2009 his painting, Treasure Chest, was exhibited in Seoul, Korea at Myung Women’s University.

Matt Klos' work has been featured in New American Paintings in the 2009 Mid-Atlantic edition and in New American Paintings in the 2006 Mid-West edition. In 2006 he won Best in Show at the Cambridge Art Association’s National Prize Show and the First Place award at the Philadelphia Sketch Club’s Annual Small Works Show. In 2001 he received a fellowship given by the internationally juried Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.

Matt Klos holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he taught painting from 2004-06. He currently lives in Baltimore, Maryland with his wife and sons where he splits time between his studio and work at Anne Arundel Community College.
